Warner Springs: A Step Back in Time
Warner Springs is a tiny community in eastern San Diego County with a full time population under 300.
The small public school educates kids from kindergarten through high school and the economic and employment center is the historic Warner Springs Ranch, which spans 2500 acres and boasts an 18-hole golf course, extensive equestrian facilities, rustic cabins, and an Olympic-sized curative hot mineral pool as well as two other cooler pools.
Our family has been visiting Warner Springs for years. That it is a privately-owned, 2500-acre resort is nothing short of amazing. It should probably be a national monument or state park of some kind. In the meantime, the local Pala Indian Tribe is in the early stages of negotiations to purchase the property from its 1200 or so owners,
The 3000+ elevation near the Palomar Mountains allows for four seasons and a step back in time. Established in 1844, the historic Warner Springs Ranch has 240 cabins, but none have television or telephones. Most do offer woodburning fireplaces, patios and spectacular mountain and starry night views. There is a small business center in the lodge (and a recent addition of wireless internet), and cell service is available. But the intent of most who visit is to UNPLUG and go OFFLINE.
Warner Springs is a scenic 50-60 mile ride from the coastal Carlsbad and San Marcos areas of San Diego, and perhaps up to an hour and a half from more distant areas of the county. From Los Angeles, it is around a two-hour drive. Membership is privately held, but guests are welcome for both lodging and golf.
The main lodge offers a restaurant, an ancient rocking cantina:-), television rooms for both kids and adults, a billiards room, library and card and game rooms. Outside and around the grounds are tennis and basketball courts, soccer fields, hiking trails, picnic facilities, serene spa, beauty salon and a small gym.
Warner Springs, though a bit remote, offers beautiful surroundings and clear starlit nights. It is a place to relax, unwind and reconnect.
