The hilly terrain in northeastern San Diego County is home to the master planned community of Rancho Bernardo. This affluent enclave is spread across rolling hills and is bisected by numerous arroyos. The fire advanced into the northeast quadrant of Poway forcing the evacuation of Palomar Pomerado Hospital. Westwood, the Trails, and Montelena were the three neighborhoods hardest hit in Rancho Bernardo. Fire suppression techniques are being established. The chaparral that abounds in the region is prone to burning, and it had been a long time since a fire came through these lands allowing for a tremendous build up of fuel.
Area Retains Bucolic Charm
The development of Rancho Bernardo has been done with an eye towards keeping a rural feel to the place. A fair is held every summer called “RB Alive!” It draws patrons from throughout the community and adjoining regions to gather together and enjoy good food, music and fun.
The oldest winery in the state of California is also found here. It is fittingly named the Bernardo Winery and dates back to 1889.
