Westwood, the Trails, and Montelena were the three neighborhoods hardest hit in Rancho Bernardo. Fire suppression techniques are being established. The chaparral that abounds in the region is prone to burning, and it had been a long time since a fire came through these lands allowing for a tremendous build up of fuel.

The oldest winery in the state of California is also found here. It is fittingly named the Bernardo Winery and dates back to 1889.
