Living the Good Life in Rancho Bernardo!

Rancho BernardoThe hilly terrain in northeastern San Diego County is home to the master planned community of Rancho Bernardo. This affluent enclave is spread across rolling hills  and is bisected by numerous arroyos. It contains multiple shopping centers, golf courses, as well as office parks that are hallmarks of the sort of large scale real estate development that has occurred in San Diego County in recent years.

Rancho Bernardo is situated about 20 miles northeast of downtown San Diego. It is south of the city of Escondido and north of Poway. Carmel Mountain Ranch and the 4S Ranch lie north and northeast as well.

The community is part of the old Mexican land grant of Rancho San Bernardo issued in 1842. In 1960 Avco Community Developers obtained incorporation status to begin real estate development here.

The community sustained significant damage in the Witch Creek Fire that raged through Rancho Bernardo on October 22, 2007 destroying hundreds of homes and obliterating whole neighborhoods. Fire crews encountered immense difficulties trying to battle the blaze in the more rugged sections of the region. Flames would leap out of canyons driven by fierce Santa Ana winds. Sometimes referred to as “devil winds,” these gusting winds come out of the desert and are extremely dry and hot.

The fire advanced into the northeast quadrant of Poway forcing the evacuation of Palomar Pomerado Hospital. Westwood, the Trails, and Montelena were the three neighborhoods hardest hit in Rancho Bernardo. Fire suppression techniques are being established. The chaparral that abounds in the region is prone to burning, and it had been a long time since a fire came through these lands allowing for a tremendous build up of fuel.

Area Retains Bucolic Charm

The development of Rancho Bernardo has been done with an eye towards keeping a rural feel to the place. A fair is held every summer called “RB Alive!” It draws patrons from throughout the community and adjoining regions to gather together and enjoy good food, music and fun.

The oldest winery in the state of California is also found here. It is fittingly named the Bernardo Winery and dates back to 1889. It has been a continuously run family enterprise since 1927 and is located at 13330 Paseo Del Verano Norte San Diego CA 92128. The winery additionally hosts a Friday’s Farmers Market from 9 a.m. to noon.

In fact, the mild climate of the region is one of the selling points that help to make the place so attractive to San Diego home shoppers. Winters are mild and frost seldom hits Rancho Bernardo. Summers are generally cooled by sea breezes, although the region is susceptible to the sort of scorching Santa Ana winds that drove the Witch Creek Fire. Rancho Bernardo is also home to the corporate headquarters of Sony, US is located in Rancho Bernardo and which contains the first television manufacturing facility sited in the US by a Japanese company. Numerous other high tech, electronic, and defense related firms are found in Rancho Bernardo–including Hewlett Packard, Eastman Kodak, Nokia, Northrop Grumman, LSI Corporation, and BAE Systems.
