The Beauty of La Jolla Beaches

La Jolla is gifted with a sculpted and exquisite shoreline with miles of beautiful beaches. Surfers, swimmers, hikers and photographers all enjoy these La Jolla beaches year round:

Black’s Beach, famous for being an occasional “nude beach” has 2 miles of sandy beach that is a favorite with surfers. The location of this beach is a bit remote. It is best to park near the Glider Port and hike down the bluffs. Be extremely careful, though, of unstable cliffs and signs warning of them. An alternative would be to walk a scenic mile from Torrey Pines State Beach when tides are low.

Children’s Pool, located next to Ellen Browning Scripps Park, is alternately and controversially  home to harbor seals and children. There is an ongoing and colorful battle that has residents wanting to reclaim the pool for children and advocates for the seals. Regardless, its a beautiful place to visit.

La Jolla Cove at 1100 Coast Boulevard in La Jolla is a favorite for photographers, swimmers and snorkelers.

La Jolla Shores at 8200 Camino Del Oro has a lovely stretch of sandy beach and offers simple access for scuba divers. Wet suits advised! For a recorded update regarding weather and diving conditions, call 619-221-8824.

Torrey Pines State Beach offers breathtaking views from above (bring camera!) and spans 4.5 miles from Del Mar to the north all the way down to Torrey Pines Mesa.  It’s a favorite for swimming, boating and fishing–in addition to  paragliders and hang gliders who soar from the cliffs above.

Windandsea at 6800 Neptune Place offers world class surfing and body boarding–and was also made famous in Tom Wolf’s novel The Pump House Gang.
