Identity theft in California is a major problem, but you can protect your credit and yourself from identity thieves by freezing your credit.
In fact, if I thought my credit had been compromised or I had become a victim of identity theft, this is probably the first thing I would do.
The current fee to freeze your credit is nominal–just $10 per credit reporting bureau (Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax). The fees are similar when you wish to lift the freeze–either temporarily or permanently.
Frankly, when credit has been compromised or stolen outright, I think credit reporting agencies should offer to freeze one’s credit automatically. And perhaps this is already in the works.
Freeze your credit and help stop California identity thieves!
