Leucadia is the quintessential funky Southern California beach town. In fact, as you drive down eucalyptus-lined Coast Highway 101, you might feel you have stepped into a time warp circa 1965 or so.
Actually a City of Encinitas community, Leucadia is located just south of Carlsbad and La Costa Avenue and north of downtown Encinitas. Here, you might notice the absence of fast food restaurants and chain stores. Instead of Starbucks, locals and friends gather at the Pannikin Coffee and Tea house. Dining opportunities are diverse, whether you are seeking aromatic Turkish dishes at the Bird House Grill, homestyle Mexican food and chicken soup at La Especial Norte, or a fusion of Mediterranean and South American cuisine at Le Papagayo. There are numerous other Mom and Pop businesses and restaurants lining this precious strip of Highway 101. And of course, there’s always the Sunday Farmer’s Market!
History of Leucadia
Leucadia was settled by English spiritualists in 1870, which might explain why so many of the streets are named after mythological Greek gods and goddesses. Drive through the lush tree-lined streets in Leucadia and you’ll see Orpheus Street, Hygeia, Vulcan, Neptune, Plato and Jupiter. In fact, Leucadia itself is derived from a Greek word loosely meaning Isle of Paradise or Place of Shelter. Leucadia’s treasured Eucalyptus trees were planted in the 1880’s–and many of them still line Coast Highway 101.
